22 Videos And Music Search

We discuss several different ways to find out information about people through their Web presence.

At beginning of class

  1. Rest of the semester:

      • By the time class begins, you should have made your site public. You need to keep it public at least until the beginning of next semester (early January). At that point you can do anything you want with it, though I would prefer that it be kept public.
      • Each person in the class will make a 2 minute (not one second more) presentation that clarifies the following:
        • The topic of your project
        • The strongest and most interesting parts of his or her project wiki.
      • By the end of Tuesday 12/9, I would like a short blog entry (it would be approximately one page if printed) on this class site that basically summaries this information (and covers those things that you would have liked to have covered if you had been given more time). The point of this blog entry is to make it easier for me to grade your assignment. You want to point out the good things about your site so that I don't overlook them. Point out those parts that took particular effort on your part or that you think are deserving of special attention (for some reason) on my part. This entry won't be graded per se; I will use it as a guide while grading your project.

Video search

All of the following sites allow you to search for videos around the Web. These sites do not allow the user to upload videos. These are also particularly good for finding news and business related videos.

  3. Truveo: “ search video across the Web” (500K)
  4. Blinkx: video search engine (200K)
  5. Google
    • Search for [video] plus whatever information you're interested in.


Except for iTunes and Google, all of the following are niche sites. That doesn't mean that they aren't worthwhile; it just means that this is not a popular class of Web sites. This section is a good set of sites for looking for business and news related sites.

All of the following sites allow uploading of videos as well as searching through the videos of others.

  3. Metacafe: “We specialize in short-form original content - from new, emerging talents and established Hollywood heavyweights alike.” (1.1M)
  4. Niche sites

Original content sites

These sites mostly focus on entertainment rather than information.

  1. Veoh: “Veoh is a revolutionary Internet TV service that gives viewers the power to easily discover, watch, and personalize their online viewing experience.” This does allow video uploads but the focus is on professionally produced videos. (1.1M)
  2. Hulu: “help people find and enjoy the world's premium video content when, where and how they want it” (500K)
  3. Vuze: “find, download, and play high quality and HD video” (review) (110K)
  4. Crackle: “your online TV network” (60K)
  5. Mevio: “MEVIO hosts networks of personality-driven episodic entertainment to best engage our customers-comprised of viewers, producers, advertisers and partners. MEVIO is one of the fastest growing entertainment sites on the web.”
